Outreach Committee Report

Below is updated and further chapter information. It’s been a quiet month, with many folks on vacation, so some information remains incomplete. With the fall season approaching, we’ll be in a better position to judge chapter status, drive, morale, etc., after a much-needed (for many activists) summer break. At least a couple of the contacts below thought that Harry Lonsdale’s chapter visits to promote the campaign finance reform initiative were/would be energizing, make them feel connected, and would help kick off the 2004 election season. Likewise, the campaign school in Portland was anticipated as a kick-start for the campaign season ahead, as well as a source of valuable training and information.

I have culled two other lists from below (& included additional information): one on chapter media contacts, the other on folks involved in finance/fundraising for their chapters. Both of these are submitted separately. –IS

Pacific Green Party Chapter Information,9-1-03
* chapter liaison
** chapter has become inactive (defined here as having no meetings nor other chapter activity)

Central Oregon PGP
Mail: P.O. Box 682, Bend OR 97709
Chair and liaison: Amy Terebesi*, 541-546-6242, terebesi@mail.com
Other: Treasurer: Phil Randall.
General Meeting: monthly, Bend Public Library.
Meetings have been better attended in the past but over spring and summer had few members; individuals’ energies have been diffused by other issues (especially peace efforts); Amy hopes to get energy going again with specific campaigns. Chapter goals for the year include: 1)the CFR initiative 2) living wage initiative 3) opening local airwaves for free access 4) running progressive Green candidates. A phone bank is being planned for all registered Greens in centralOregoncounties for campaign finance reform.

Coos County PGP
John Jones* jjones@uci.net, 541.572.5308, 49658 Myrtle Creek Rd. Myrtle Point,OR. 9745.
Other: Treasurer, Monica Schreiber, 541-756-2042.
General Meetings: none have been held in months, although a newsletter was recently sent out.
John’s assessment is that the chapter has become less active. Greens have participated in the group Human Rights Advocates of Coos County recently, with a day with Oregon Peaceworks planned in October, but not campaign issues. NOTE: Questionnaire, & phone message out, no reply yet.

**Douglas County PGP
Stuart Liebowitz* 1832 NE Fremont, Roseburg, OR 97470 541.672.9819
**Stuart considers the chapter to have become inactive; no meetings have been held for months, and there is no plan to start these up again, as there is not a critical mass of Greens in the county. Stuart is open to some sort of regional group forming with other chapters inSouthern Oregonso that Douglas Greens remain connected.

Jackson County PGP

General Meeting: 4th Mon. monthly,7-8:30 PM, Ashland Public Library, except no general meetings in Jul. & Aug.; this Sept meeting on the 29th. Steering committee meetings 2nd Mon. every month @6:30pm, site varies.
Level of activity varies, dependent to some extent upon election cycle. Looking for an upswing this fall after a quiet summer. Tabling at events with voter registration & petitioning. Goals for this election cycle include 1) CFR initiative 2) running local Green candidates (for partisan or non-partisan positions).

Josephine County PGP
Liaison and co-chair: Jon Wacker*, isoman@internetcds.com 541.955-.9176; www.victory2000.cafeprogressive.com.
Co-chair: John Roach
Treasurer: Dick Corrigan
Secretary: Lorraine Roach
Internal Communications: Leatta Wacker
CC at large: Dale Matthews.
Jon’s assessment is that the group got less active after their major election drive for Matthews’ campaign in the fall. Many individuals got involved in the peace actions, and the last general meeting, attended by 15 people, was in late Apr.-May. The core group has met in the interim, and Jon believes the chapter may be reenergized by the campaign finance reform initiative, as well as potentially, by a bid by Greens for a reorganized and expanded Josephine County commission, if that plan is approved by the voters. The election for the latter will be soon, and the chapter will then have a better idea on how to proceed. Also, communication with Jackson County chapter on holding regional (Southern Oregon) Green Party meetings, with the potential for consolidating some efforts.

Linn Benton PGP
Yaney MacIver yaneyla@peak.org 541.753.3138; Sara Burton sarab4u2002@hotmail.com 541.451.1607. Matt Donohue 541-485-5822, donohmat@earthlink.net; Delbert McCombs, 541-847-5950, earthsrising@juno.com
NOTE: I spoke with Yaney, who stated that the chapter CC, along with a liaison/outreach person, will be elected at the September meeting. Monthly meetings, the 2nd Tuesday of the month, have been held since July, 2002, and the chapter bylaws were just put into place. The chapter has been getting more active, although 9/11 put a “crimp” in chapter doings for a while. The chapter’s goals are to go to Level 1, to develop a voter registration plan, and to run local candidates.

NOTE: Liaison questionnaire that I sent to Steve was distributed to their chapter e list, results on that pending. Steve mentioned that a ward canvassing plan was underway, to provide education and to help organize wards; outreach had occurred to various groups including the Grange and even Pentecostals. There have been Greens on the City Council in the past, as well as campaigns in the last election with very respectable returns. Green voter registration increasing, and there is a committed core, but more active members needed.

Voter registration once monthly at federal courthouse (Naturalization Hearing) & during events with tabling or roving registration. Lots of voter turnover, registered Green numbers about the same. Precinct system underway, including canvassing; also, volunteer program established, including tracking, still fine-tuning. The fund-raising system also being fine-tuned, with a 10% increase in funds over the past year and plans to hire a fundraising coordinator; finance committee with budget established. The latter issues were discussed in a goal-setting summer meeting, goals also including running local candidates and providing those with more support; outreach was identified as a weak area.
Lastly, potential sub-chapter formation in Washington and Clackamas Counties.
