Media Committee Report for October
I did not have time to contact people to add more members to the Media
Team and/or the Media Matrix Committee this month. In looking at
Irene’s Chapter Development report, I see several people whom I might
call upon to join the matrix committee. I hope to have time for that
later in November, since I am almost done with “catch up” work on PGP
records. I also need to work on updating my media contact lists. We
have a new media listserve up on the website, and I’d like to make it
a discussion list for sharing ideas for more frequent press releases,
vetting each other’s work, and coordinated letters-to-the-editor
campaigns. I sent out an invitation to the old media committee list
for the former media committee members to join the new list, but have
not been notified that anyone has done so. It’s going to take some
phoning.
My media activities for the month of October included weekly posts to
the Announce list, placing an ad in the Statesman Journal for the
October convention, and publishing press releases before and after the
convention (see below). These press releases go out to the PGP News
listserve, the GPUS states media listserve, my state and local media
contact lists, and my own local lists of Greens and “Naderites.” This
month I’ve also started posting them to the Green Voice On-Line.
I researched prices at a number of newspapers in order to place the ad
for our fundraiser position opening, and ended up placing ads with the
Portland Tribune (three weeks), the Eugene Weekly (one week), and the
Peaceworker (one month), the latter with the help of Trey. I also
posted the ad to the Announce list and the job description, modified
from the original, to my local lists and to the GV On-line. Peter put
the job description on the website, and Jeff Cropp posted the ad to a
number of listserves.

PACIFIC GREEN PARTY CALLS FOR BOYCOTT OF KILLER COKE
The Pacific Green Party of Oregon passed a resolution at its fall
convention supporting a boycott of all products manufactured by the
Coca Cola Company, including Sprite, Fanta, Minute Maid, Nestea,
Powerade, Swerve, and bottled Dasani water. Convention-goers voted
unanimously to support the boycott after hearing testimony from Juan
Carlos Galvi, a union organizer for Coca Cola workers in Colombia,
S.A. Sr. Galvi, whose own life has been threatened, told about massive
human rights violations including murder, torture, and kidnapping
committed against union leaders and members by paramilitaries
encouraged by the company’s managers in Colombia in an effort to crush
their union.
The convention took place on October 25 at the new Cipriano Ferrel
Education Building in Woodburn, named for one of the founders of
Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noreste (PCUN). The PGP was honored
with the presence of several other international guests, including
visitors from Zambia here to observe the democratic process and Jaime
Castillo Ulloa from Tehuacan, Mexico, who testified about the damage
to that country’s workers and farmers as a result of the North
American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
PGP members present explored the possibility of a self-funded primary
for Green candidates in 2004 and heard a presentation on fair taxation
in Oregon, in preparation for consideration of remedies for the
state’s current fiscal crisis, with its resultant cuts in public
services. They also heard presentations from potential candidates for
national office, re-elected Marnie Glickman as the PGP delegate to the
Green Party US, endorsed and pledged to work for Initiative #53, which
will put Campaign Finance Reform on the ballot in Oregon next
November, and enjoyed a “Slow Food” dinner of Russian and Hispanic
dishes prepared by the host chapter, the Marion/Polk Greens.
