8/29/10 Minutes
Phone Conference at 7:00 PM
Present: Michael Meo (facilitator), Suzia Aufderheide, Barbara Ashman,
Seth Woolley, Charles Newlin (notetaker), Randy Prince
Previous Minutes approved by consensus.
Discussion of proposed permanent candidate search and development
committee: Randy expressed concern that it might rule out late-breaking
candidate applications, all agreed that it should not. Charles agreed
to serve on such a committee despite prior protestations. The concept
was approved pending further research and carried to next meeting.
Proposed Bylaw change concerning nominating conventions: intent was to
limit the number of conventions to 2 and put them on preset dates,
within the existing requirements, so that the process would be more
predictable. They would be on the 1st Saturday after the primaries,
with a subsequent convention a couple of weeks before August 24, just
early enough to leave time for gathering signatures for voters
pamphlet. Randy suggested leaving open the possibility of a last-minute
convention. Barbara opposed trying to change the bylaws, suggested
instead a formal policy or "Operating Procedure" to be approved by the
convention.
Randy also suggested requiring that the June nominating convention
approve a platform document or update BEFORE making nominations, so all
are aware of the party's positions. Discussion indicated that might be
very difficult or at least lengthy. Some way of cutting off the
discussion would be necessary.
The proposal was carried over; Suzia will prepare documents for the
proposals on the table.
Barbara volunteered to become volunteer/outreach coordinator to solve
the problems she sees with our accessibility to new members. Seth will
make available the list of 1500 member email addresses the party
obtained from a contractor. (Corrections to this description?)
Barbara will recruit further committee members and bring their names to
the SCC for approval. Barbara's offer was approved by consensus and
with thanks.
Authorization to send out a press release opposing Facebook's censorship
of an ad for marijuana legalization was approved by consensus. Randy
(?) suggested sending it to websites in particular, where there has been
much discussion of the issue.
Michael and Seth reported on a conflict in the Metro chapter. Charles
reported the Linn-Benton chapter was organizing an event on 10/10/10 in
coordination with 350.org.
Next week: Fac.: Charles Newlin; Notetaker: Randy Prince
